Community litter pick arranged to clean up Valley Gardens

16 March 2026

Following a letter from a concerned local resident, a community litter pick has been arranged to clean up the Grade II listed Sun Pavillion and Sun Colonnade in Harrogate’s Valleys Gardens.

The Sun Colonnade was described as looking “neglected” and “dirty” in a recent public letter by local resident, Valerie Cooke, who also cited litter covering the footway, damaged wood coverings and gaps in the roof.

Fellow local resident and Conservative candidate for the upcoming by-election in Valley Gardens ward, Tom Martin, was motivated to do something about the problem after reading the public letter. In conjunction with Friends of Valley Gardens, Tom has organised the community litter pick to help clean up the much-loved public space and make a positive difference in the local community.

Tom commented:

Living on Harlow Terrace, I use Valley Gardens every day; whether it’s walking our dog or taking our little girl to the playground at the weekend. I want to make sure it continues to thrive for the benefit of both the local community and the many visitors to Harrogate.

I’d like to thank Valerie Cooke for taking the time to raise this issue and the Friends of Valley Gardens for helping me to arrange the community litter pick.

The community litter pick will take place at 10am on Wednesday 1st April, meeting at the Sun Pavillion and Sun Colonnade. Anybody is welcome to attend the event and litter grabbers and rubbish bags will be provided.

Tom added:

Eagle-eyed observers will have spotted that the community litter pick has been arranged for after the Valley Gardens by-election on Thursday 19th March. I want to ensure this is a real community effort and not a political campaign stunt.

Rest assured this is no April Fools’ Day stunt and I will be leading the session regardless of the by-election result! I hope to see you there.
