Local MP calls for Knaresborough Assets Restoration Package

17 February 2026

Tom Gordon MP, Member of Parliament for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has called for a comprehensive restoration package to protect and enhance Knaresborough’s key heritage assets, including Knaresborough Castle, Knaresborough Viaduct and Castle Yard.

Tom has been campaigning for urgent action from the Duchy of Lancaster and North Yorkshire Council to protect and restore Knaresborough Castle. In December 2025, he formally presented a petition to Parliament calling for action.

The recent collapse of the riverside walkway has further highlighted concerns about the long-term maintenance and stewardship of some of the town’s most important historic sites, prompting renewed calls for coordinated investment.

The Government has now responded to the petition. The Minister for Museums, Heritage and Gambling recognised the importance of Knaresborough’s heritage to tourism and community pride and committed to raising the matter with the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire. Tom has welcomed this engagement and says he is determined to work with all relevant partners to secure a restoration package worthy of the town’s historic significance.

A meeting has also been confirmed with the National Lottery Heritage Fund later this year, where Tom will press the case for funding to protect and revitalise the town’s heritage assets.

Tom said:

Knaresborough’s heritage, from the iconic Knaresborough Viaduct to the Castle, deserves a proper restoration package. These are vital assets for our town, drawing visitors from across the country to enjoy views over the River Nidd and to experience our rich history.

We have seen fantastic work from community campaigners and local councillors Matt Walker and Hannah Gostlow in standing up for our town and calling for improved maintenance and long-term investment.

The recent riverside walkway collapse shows why we cannot afford to delay. We need a joined-up plan involving the Duchy, the Council, regional leaders and heritage bodies to ensure these treasured sites are properly protected for future generations.

I will continue to push for the funding and cooperation needed to deliver a restoration package that enhances everything Knaresborough has to offer.
