Councillor Demands Relief Road Before More Housing

3 November 2025

Councillor Kevin Foster has voiced strong opposition to a proposed 420-home development off the A6136 near Colburn, warning that the scheme would worsen congestion, overload local infrastructure, and destroy valuable greenfield land.

Kevin Foster said:

The A6136 is already at breaking point.

Traffic through Colburn and Catterick Garrison grinds to a halt most days.

Adding hundreds more cars without fixing the road first would be reckless and irresponsible.

Councillor Foster has been leading the community campaign for a relief road to ease congestion and improve safety. His petition has already gathered more than 1,000 signatures — a clear sign of how strongly residents feel.

Kevin said:

The message from residents couldn’t be clearer — no relief road, no new housing.

It’s time to stop building first and thinking later.

The proposed development would also see green fields lost to housing, despite widespread agreement that new homes should be built on brownfield or previously developed land wherever possible.

Councillor Foster added:

I’m not against new homes.

But they must be in the right place, with the right roads, schools, and services to support them.

Paving over green fields while the A6136 is gridlocked isn’t progress — it’s poor planning.

Councillor Foster said he will continue to stand with residents to make sure their voices are heard as the plans move forward.
