Harrogate Philharmonic Orchestra Concert – Saturday 11th October at 7.30pm – St Marks Church, Harrogate.
An evening of rousing marches, lyrical English folk tunes, and Haydn’s witty and triumphant final symphony awaits our audience on Saturday 11th October!
Harrogate Philharmonic Orchestra is a chamber orchestra of around 30 semi-professional and amateur local musicians. They regularly play at St Mark’s church in Harrogate.
They have a diverse, exciting repertoire, often championing lesser known composers who have now become more prominent and popular in recent years. Composers such as Florence Price, Colebridge-Taylor and Tailleferre. This, combined with the classics of chamber orchestra repertoire, make for exciting concerts.
The programme for the 11th October is music taken from the popular repertoire of the chamber orchestra:
Vaughan Williams – Folk Song Suite
Written in 1923 for military band, it was later arranged for orchestra and is a lively suite which weaves together English folk melodies that Vaughan Williams collected. It captures both rustic charm and rousing energy, celebrating England’s musical heritage.
Delius – On hearing the first cuckoo in Spring
One of Delius’s most loved orchestral miniatures that paints an idyllic countryside landscape. Listen out for the cuckoo played by the clarinet.
Warlock – Capriol Suite
Composed in 1926 this suite reimagines Renaissance dance tunes with archaic melodies and modern harmonies. It remains one of Peter Warlock’s most enduring works.
Haydn – Symphony No. 104
This was Haydn’s last symphony and premiered in London in 1795. It epitomises Haydn’s mastery and his role as the “father of the symphony.”
