Five ways to protect your eyes this summer

1 August 2022

The bright, long days of summer are something that we look forward to for most of the year. But while you’re soaking in the rays, it’s worth remembering to protect your eyes. Whether you’re in the pool or just sunbathing, it’s important to take steps to keep your eyes healthy. If not, the surface of your eyes could burn – causing temporary or permanent damage. Below, we explore five ways to protect your eyes this summer.

Wear sunglasses outside
One of the main dangers to your eyes in summer is UV rays from the sun. Just as UV rays can burn your skin, leading to sunburn and heatstroke, these rays are also capable of burning the surface of your eye. This can be particularly uncomfortable and painful, even if it’s temporary. Plus, if you look directly into the sun, you risk permanent damage. However, you can protect your eyes from these risks by wearing sunglasses outside. As long as you pick up an appropriate set of shades, you’ll be able to enjoy those bright summer days without worrying about your eyes.

Stay hydrated
Dehydration can impact your eyes. It dries them out, leading to eye strain or dry eye. Without the water needed for tears, your eyes will find it harder to wash out debris and will quickly become tired. However, by drinking plenty of water you should avoid this issue.

Wear goggles in the pool
The chlorine in pools can make your eyes sting. And that’s not to mention any other foreign debris that might enter your eye from the pool. As such, you should always make sure you protect your eyes by wearing goggles in the pool. At the same time, if you’re a contact lens wearer, you should always remember to take them out before you enter the water.

Re-wetting drops
The warm climate and air conditioning in summer can quickly dry your eyes out. This can be painful and make it more difficult for your eyes to wash dirt out. However, by using re-wetting drops, you should be able to lubricate your eyes.

Watch what you get in your eyes
You should also be careful about what you get in your eyes. For instance, sun cream or moisturiser can both be painful if they come into contact with your eyes. Always be careful when applying creams or lotions and quickly wash out any substance that enters the eyes.
Summer is an exciting time to be out and about: you’ll want your eyes to be relaxed and comfortable during this time. And by following the guide above, you should be all set to look after your eyes this summer.
