Gateways School students receive Archbishop of York Youth Trust Young Leaders Awards

28 January 2014

A group of 21 Year 10 students at Gateways School in Harewood have been presented with the prestigious Young Leaders Award by the Archbishop of York Youth Trust.

The Youth Trust is a grant-making programme that supports and partners a number of projects working with young people in deprived areas across the North. Set up in 2009 by Dr John Sentamu, it has quickly become established as one of the leading youth work charities in the north of England. The Trust aims to enable young people to make a transformative difference to their communities through its pioneering Young Leaders Award and on Friday 24th January Julia Robertson, The Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award Manager, presented the Gateways students with their certificates and badges.

In order to gain the Award, the Gateways students have followed Faith and Hope modules in their RE and PSHE lessons over the past year and visited a charity, Leeds-based St Gemma’s Hospice. They have also completed three Action Projects – they organised a fundraising event, Bright Night Dance Night, which raised over £600 for the Archbishop of York Youth Trust and visited Highfield Care Home for the elderly performing music and dance and chatting with the residents. They have also undertaken a Personal Volunteering Challenge in the community.

Gateways School Headmistress Dr Tracy Johnson said: We are very proud of our students and their significant achievement in receiving their Young Leaders Awards. At Gateways we encourage our students to get involved in community projects and it is a privilege for our students to have been able to contribute to the valuable work of the Trust which makes such a difference to so many young people’s lives.
