Older People’s Day is celebrated on the 1st October and has a different theme each year. This year the theme was ‘Full of Life’ promoting and praising the fact that as we grow older we don’t have to give up the activities we used to enjoy, we can continue with or take up hobbies and interests irrespective of our age.
People are living longer and 23% of the UK will be aged 65 and over by 2035. The main aim of Older People’s Day is to celebrate the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society and tackle negative attitudes and outdated stereotypes.
Home Instead Senior Care who support and assist older people living in their own homes were keen to support this event as they believe that with the right support in place we can continue to enjoy life to the full. The team from Home Instead hosted a coffee morning at Montpellier Court sheltered housing, Harrogate, where the emphasis was on keeping safe within the home and advice on how to avoid trips and falls, plus they were on hand with exercises to strengthen the foot and ankle. They then visited Vale Court retirement housing in Knaresborough to host an afternoon tea party with a pampering session with mobile beauty therapist Nicole Inggall from ‘Gorgeous on the Go’ offering relaxing hand, back and neck massages.
Sheena Van Parys from Home Instead commented:
It was a lovely week where we were able to get out into the community and listen to some wonderful stories from people who really were full of life. We heard that it doesn’t matter whether you are 18 or 82 years old you can still enjoy yoga, swimming, walking, dancing and even transcendental meditation. Everyone we spoke to was very inspirational and knew how to have fun, despite the years.
