Thirsk awarded Walkers are Welcome accreditation

26 July 2013

Thirsk has been awarded Walkers are Welcome Status, the first town in Hambleton District to achieve this prestigious accreditation and it joins more than 100 other towns across the UK.

TV celebrity walker Julia Bradbury sums up “The Walkers are Welcome Scheme is a truly innovative project. It’s such a simple concept; set up an accreditation scheme for walk‐friendly towns, then encourage the towns to network together for support, advice and ideas”.

Thirsk Tourist Information Centre, supported by residents, local businesses, walking groups, Thirsk Town Council and Hambleton District Council, has led a group of volunteers to submit the application. The aim is to promote Thirsk as a base for walking in our beautiful area both for visitors and local people. There are many benefits including boosting the local economy, encouraging the use of p! ublic transport and improving health in the area.

Walkers-Are-WelcomeThirsk shops and businesses are now entitled to display the Walkers are Welcome logo and Window Stickers are available from the Thirsk Tourist Information office in the Market Place.
