Airedale and North Bradford CID would like to speak to anyone who has information about the incident and a stolen BMW X1 used in the attempted robbery which took place at around 10.10am yesterday at a jewellers premises on Brook Street in Ilkley.

It took place after three masked men approached the business and attempted to break in with sledgehammers.

Staff activated Police recommended security equipment including shutter screens which prevented the men from entering the premises and stealing property.

The raiders then fled the scene in a grey BMW X1 4×4 style car which was found abandoned nearby off Wells Road in Ilkley shortly afterwards and has now been recovered by Police for forensic examination.

The car was carrying false plates carrying the registration AU61 SB0 and was stolen from a property in Bradford overnight between May 24 and 25th.

Its original registration was YD10 AWH and Police are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen this car being driven around Ilkley either today or recently.

The suspects were all described as males and were wearing masks at the time of the offence.

DI Richard Partis of Airedale and North Bradford CID, said:

We are conducting a number of enquiries into this attempted robbery which was actually frustrated by security systems the victims fitted on the recommendation of their local Police, leaving thieves empty handed on this occasion.

Officers were on scene very quickly following this attempted robbery and have also now recovered the stolen BMW X1 4×4 style vehicle used in the offence which was carrying registration plates AU61 SB0.

We are very keen to hear from anyone who has seen this car being driven around the Bradford area since it was stolen or who has seen it in the Ilkley area either today or recently.

The DI added: “We have already received a number of calls from residents and we are grateful for all the information received so far. I would ask anyone who saw the suspect vehicle and possibly the driver to contact Airedale and North Bradford CID on 101 or CrimeStoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
