North Yorkshire’s school chefs are getting ready to give children across the county a taste of tradition and serve up a fine afternoon tea to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
North Yorkshire County Caterers, which runs the county council’s school meals service, holds regular training sessions for school chefs around the county to extend their skills, improve confidence and ensure their professional development.
Special sessions to prepare school chefs for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations which are now taking place include cup cake decorating and presentation, piping skills and the creation of different sponge recipes.

County Councillor Arthur Barker, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Schools said:
Many of our schools will want to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in traditional style and we want to make sure our school chefs are more than ready to make the most of the occasion.
Members of the catering staff now have the opportunity to achieve accredited catering qualifications; 160 school chefs have completed NVQ’s in Professional Cookery. Apprenticeships are also being offered across the county with 20 catering staff currently involved in this scheme.
Other training offered includes health and safety, craft skills, food safety, nutrition and a healthier school meal and customer services.
Training is an essential part of County Caterers’ acclaimed success in providing nutritious, appetizing school meals which are prepared fresh daily using locally sourced ingredients.
