Police investigate fatal Leyburn collision

PolicePolice are appealing for witnesses after a pedestrian was fatally injured in a road traffic collision near Leyburn.

The collision occurred at approximately 7.35pm on Thursday 19 January 2012 on the A684 near to the Wyvill Arms Public House at Constable Burton.

A white Mercedes Sprinter panel van, travelling towards Bedale, collided with a 66-year-old local man who suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The van driver, a 45 year old male from the Bedale area, was uninjured in the collision. He has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on police bail as enquiries continue.

Officers are appealing anyone who saw the pedestrian or the van prior to the time of the collision, or witnessed the incident itself to get in touch.

Traffic Constable Graham Waller, of North Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Group, said:

Sadly, this collision resulted in a man losing his life and it is important that we establish the circumstances in which he died.

Although there has been an arrest it is vital to the investigation that anyone who has any information about the collision gets in touch with the police as soon as possible.
