Workington 2 Harrogate Town 1

26 October 2011

Harrogate’s trip to Cumbria ended in disappointment as they went down 2-1 to basement club Workington.

Starting with the same line up that lost a close game at Worcester, Town were soon on the defensive as the Cumbrians made the better start.

As early as the second minute Mark Boyd’s 20 yard flashed narrowly wide and shortly afterwards the Town defence did well to block Adam Main’s powerful effort.

After eleven minutes, against the run of play, Harrogate took the lead with their first attack. A clearance out of defence sent Alex Meecham away down the left and his low centre was swept home by Peter Bore.

Town began to pile on the pressure with Will Turl heading Craig Radcliffe’s corner wide and keeper Aaran Taylor denying Bore after he had been played in after a penetrative run by Luke Dean.

Workington’s main threat came from two Boyd free kicks, his first being headed wide and Zac Jones punching the second clear.

But it was Town who had a chance to extend their lead before the break when Radcliffe’s centre found Bore, who laid off to Turl, only for his shot to be diverted for a corner.

The home team looked short on confidence and the home crowd were either critical or resigned to defeat.

However, things changed dramatically seconds after the restart.

The ball was passed back to Jones who unfortunately scuffed his clearance straight to Jonny Wright, and he gratefully shot home for the equaliser.

It was Workington’s turn to dominate and Jones did well to save Gari Rowntree’s free kick which was heading for the top corner. Then

Jonny Wright spurned a great chance to give the Cumbrian’s the lead when he shot against Jones’s legs when he broke clear.

Town manager Simon Weaver rang the changes with Brayson,Elam and Ross replacing Turl, Bore and Bloomer.

The trouble was it Workington who extended their lead with 25 minutes left when Jonny Wright found overlapping full back David Hewson on the right and he slammed in a tremendous cross shot off the underside of the bar to give Jones no chance.

Town began to attack but their excellent approach play was spoilt with a loose final pass and a tendency to lose possession.

Two vicious cross shots from left winger Anthony Wright flashed just wide as Town were twice caught on the break.

As the game reached it’s final minute,Town produced their best move of the game, attacking firstly down the left then switching to the right, before Jonny Allan swept the final pass over the bar from close range.
