Volunteers clear popular footpath in Ripon

29 November 2011

North Yorkshire County Council has been working with the Rotary Club in Ripon to improve a popular local footpath.

The Rotary Club has recently taken on responsibility from the Ripon Ramblers for the Ripon Rowel, a 50 mile long distance circular walk starting and finishing in the town.

The county council’s rights of way officers and countryside rangers have been working with volunteers from the Rotary Club to make it easier for members of the public to use this route.

Officers have walked the route with the volunteers to update the waymarking and rangers have led a Saturday working party to clear an overgrown section of footpath which the Rowel follows at Bishop Monkton from Ings Lane to the Boroughbridge Road. The route had become very overgrown and impassable in places due to fallen trees which were successfully cleared.

County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Countryside Services said: “This sterling initiative by Rotary Club volunteers with the support of the county council means that the people of Ripon can continue to enjoy this beautiful walk from their city

The county council hopes to work with Rotarians in the future to improve other sections of this popular route.
