The Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company is launching a special photo competition to celebrate the line’s 150th anniversary of passenger services on the line.
Amateur and professional photographers can enter the competition which will see the best 12 images featured in the 2027 Settle Carlisle Calendar, and the prize for the best photograph will be two first-class dining tickets on one of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company’s special steam charter train.
The theme for this year’s competition is Connecting Communities, focusing on the station along the 72 miles of line.
The Connecting Communities photo competition is part of the 150th anniversary celebrations, and follows the successful Spiriting of the Settle Carlisle Line competition last year.
Chair of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, Pete Myres said:
This is a very special year for the Settle Carlisle line, our 150th anniversary of our passenger service.
We want to capture how the line, which opened in August 1876 to get passengers as quickly as possible from London to Edinburgh and Glasgow, now serves the communities it passes through.
The Settle Carlisle line has been named the best scenic railway route in Europe by travel publisher Lonely Planet. And last year was in the TripAdvisor top ten visitor attractions in the World – making it a popular choice with visitors as well as locals. The line brings economic benefits for the communities in both Yorkshire and Cumbria, offering a sustainable tourism opportunity, whilst providing a regular service for local people to get to work, college, school and leisure.
The railway buildings capture the heritage of the railway, and there will be plenty of opportunities for photographers to find the perfect location for their photos.
The competition allows everyone to be part of our special celebrations, and we look forward to seeing all the entries.
The competition is open to all photographers, amateur and professional. All entries must be submitted in digital and landscape format. Full details of the competition are available on the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company’s social media and website www.settle-carlisle.co.uk
