Winter nights are upon us, and Harrogate theatre lovers know a good play is hard to resist—but not everyone wants to venture out after dark. Enter Lunchtime Plays: a bold new concept bringing gripping theatre into the middle of the day.
The initiative is launched by The Classic Theatre Project, founded by local actor Bryan Bounds, with the aim of presenting sharp, timeless classics in intimate spaces at a time that suits busy lives. Think of it as a Lunchtime Recital—only with thrilling, full-blooded theatre.
The season opens with Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story, a powerful 60-minute drama first premiered in 1959 and still uncomfortably relevant today. Two men. One park bench in Central Park. Jerry, an alienated outsider, collides with Peter, a comfortable middle-class professional secure in his own carefully ordered “zoo.” Expect intense storytelling, wickedly funny dialogue, and a rug-pulled-from-under-you climax—perfect for newcomers to Albee and seasoned theatre fans alike.
