Step out with North Yorkshire’s new rambling guide

6 September 2011

Ramblers are being put on the trail of ten walks across some of the finest countryside in North Yorkshire .

A new guide – “Open Access Walks North Yorkshire – Ten Walks Across the Moors and Wolds” – is a joint publication from North Yorkshire County Council and the Ramblers.

Tom Franklin, Councillor Stephen Shaw, brochure editor Tom Halstead, and Lord Middleton

The guide gives details of ten walks taking in the classic Dales landscapes to the west of the county, the scenic Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the peaceful splendour of the Yorkshire Wolds.

Each walk makes use of Open Access land – designated areas of mountain, moor, heath, downland and registered common land over which the public can walk freely. The routes vary from easy relaxing strolls to more challenging upland routes but all have one thing in common – the unrivalled natural beauty of North Yorkshire.

A celebratory launch event at Thixendale was attended by Ramblers Chief Executive Tom Franklin, local County Councillor Stephen Shaw and landowner Lord Middleton, who personally agreed additional seasonal permissive access for one of the walks.

County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Countryside Services, said:

This is great example of partnership working. The booklet provides fantastic opportunities for people to make the most of the countryside and at the same time supports local businesses who often rely on the additional trade that visitors bring.

Tom Franklin commented:

It was good to see how the greater access rights which we now enjoy are opening up previously secret parts of the countryside. It’s also good to see the council, the Ramblers, and the landowner working together to make these new walks a success
