Local Italian Community Donates £1,200 Worth of Sensory Kits to Harrogate District Hospital

Harrogate District Hospital’s Emergency Department has received a donation of sensory kits valued at £1,200 from La Buona Notizia (“Good News”), an Italian Catholic community based at St. Joseph’s Church in Harrogate.

The fundraising idea was inspired by Dr Rosaria Buccoliero, Consultant Neurologist at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT), who had recently learnt about the positive impact sensory kits can have on patient experience in hospital settings.

Sensory kits are designed to support autistic individuals and people with learning disabilities who may find the busy environment of emergency care overwhelming.

Each kit contains items such as fidget toys, noise cancelling headphones, face masks and activity books, all aimed at helping patients self-regulate, reduce distress, and feel more in control during periods of emotional or physical stress.

Whilst the newly purchased kits were presented to the Emergency Department this week, they will also be available for any ward or department within the hospital.

Ben Haywood-Noble, Acute Liaison Nurse, said: “We are extremely grateful for this donation from the La Buona Notizia Italian community in Harrogate.

“Hospital visits can be distressing for many people with learning disabilities. These sensory items will make a real and immediate difference, offering comfort and helpful distraction during challenging moments.”

Dr Rosaria Buccoliero, Consultant Neurologist, said: “As an Italian community living in Harrogate, La Buona Notizia carries with it the warmth, generosity and deep sense of solidarity that define our culture.

“Turning the £1,200 raised at our 2025 Christmas event into sensory kits that will support people with disabilities fills us with pride.

“This project is a gesture of love from our families to the wider community that has welcomed us. Every ticket sold, every volunteer who helped, and every smile shared at our events made this possible.

“Together, we have shown that even a small community, when united, can make a meaningful difference.”

Yvonne Campbell, Head of Charity, added: “We are deeply grateful to the La Buona Notizia community for this generous contribution. Their support has enabled the provision of sensory kits that will make a tangible difference to individuals with learning disabilities across our hospital.

“Acts of kindness like this strengthen our ability to enhance the care we provide for everyone who comes through our doors.”
