Harrogate High students help with Tour celebrations

Countdown Start

Students from Harrogate High School have assisted with the ‘One Year to Go’ celebrations until the Tour de France comes to Yorkshire.

Back in January 2013 Harrogate High was the first ever school to join Welcome to Yorkshire – a company that exists to promote every good about Yorkshire. Through this partnership the school was given the chance to take part in the one-off event.

The event, held outside Leeds Art Gallery also included students from Hull and Leeds schools. The students taking part in the celebrations were joined by cycling celebrities Dean Dowling, a current Yorkshire pro and Brian Robinson the first British rider to win the Tour de France in 1958. Leeds City Council Leader Keith Wakefield and Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Gary Verity were also in attendance.

The students were interviewed by media outlets as well as having a big photo taken while posing on their own bikes in the famous yellow jerseys.

Principal at Harrogate High School Andrew Bayston said:

It was a lovely to see our students on what will be the start line of the Tour next year. Taking part in the day’s events has kick started the learning that surrounds a global event such as the Tour de France and reinforces our identity as Sports College with excellent opportunities in a wide range of sports.
