Inquest concludes a verdict of suicide over Rossett School teacher

23 February 2012

An inquest into the death of Rossett School teacher David Charlesworth was told yesterday by the school’s head Patricia Hunter that he was a “fantastic teacher”.

The court heard that Mr Charlesworth, 43, died following an incident on May 11 last year when he set himself alight in the car park of the school in Harrogate.

The popular science teacher was rushed to hospital with 79 per cent burns but died a day later.

Deputy North Yorkshire Coroner Geoff Fell recorded a verdict of suicide and told the hearing that he would be writing to the chief executive of the local health trust to raise “serious concerns” about Mr Charlesworth’s treatment.

The inquest had heard evidence from counsellor Dr Allan Gilbert, Mr Charlesworth’s GP, Dr Alan Cunningham, and Alan Coates, a health manager for North Yorkshire and York PCT.
