High Sheriff visits flagship primary

17 February 2012

The Mayor of Harrogate presented Western Primary as the town’s flagship primary school on an official tour with the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire on Thursday 9th February.

Cllr Ellington said:

The High Sheriff is a direct appointment of Her Majesty The Queen.

The role is the second most important in the county after the Lord-Lieutenant. It’s an honour that the High Sheriff should visit us, and we wanted to show her some of Harrogate’s best exemplars of education, business and tourism. We chose Western Primary for our school visit because of its warm welcome, and the boundlessenergy and enthusiasm of the children. We were so impressed with the school on our first visit in 2011 that we chose to present it as one of Harrogate’s top attractions.

Children from Year 1 and 2 lined the reception area of the school to give a very warm welcome toHigh Sheriff Mrs Alexandra Holford, Mr Michael Holford and the Mayor and Mayoress of Harrogate. The official visitors were then escorted through the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 areas of the school by Head Teacher Cheryl Smith, Teresa Brooke, Chair of Governors and Year 6 children, who talked the partythrough some of the art, sculptures and projects adorning the walls.

Pausing to meet children in the new ICT suite and the school’s unique Quiet Room, Mrs Holford said:

I am very impressed! This is a large primary school that serves a vibrant community. I have been made to feel very welcome and the children and staff have all been very proud to show me around. The school’s facilities are vast. It clearly provides a wealth of modern, interactive learning opportunities that give children confidence, an appetite for learning and an education for life. It was a delightful visit.
