Police treatment centre in Harrogate secures £500,000 grant

23 May 2012

The Police Treatment Centres, a Harrogate based charity, has announced that it is to receieve £500,000 to support the Duke of York Wing refurbishment at the St Andrews Centre Harrogate.

Home Secretary, Theresa May, made public the approval of the application for the grant at the Police Federation of England and Wales Conference on Wednesday 16 May 2012.

This is a result from a presentation to Home Office officials on 4 April 2012 and then further work to strengthen the business case to facilitate a ‘ministerial submission’ to the Home Secretary by the charity’s CEO Michael Baxter QPM.

The Police Treatment Centres has been in existence as a charity for more than one hundred years and provides intensive physiotherapy, treatment and care to police officers who have been injured or who have fallen ill. Every year around 4000 officers are treated and in a great many cases can return to work far sooner than anticipated; thereby providing significant efficiency savings for police forces, and in turn the taxpayer, by an officer’s earlier return to work.

The grant is 50% of the total cost and amounts to £500,000. The Duke of York Wing was built in 1980s and is need of total refurbishment costing £1 000 000. The Charity, having already raised £120,000, is in the process of raising the remainder and believes this news will act as encouragement for others to support it to ‘match’ the Home Office funding, because no one would not wish to see that money lost back to the Home Office!

CEO Michael Baxter QPM commented:

We are very grateful that the Home Secretary considered our recent business case submission for support and was able to respond and help our work in a most practical way. We are very proud of the work we do to support injured and ill police officers and this grant gives a huge boost to the development programme here in Harrogate.
