Edgar Allan Poe’s The Mystery of Marie Rogêt’ was the second crime fiction story ever written and the first based on a real crime. Today, there is an explosion in true crime novels and this panel explores the ethics in the fine margins between truth and fiction.
In Sam Holland’s terrifying debut The Echo Man, the title character emulates notorious serial killers in a string of murders across England; Winnie M Li’s Dark Chapter is a brilliant and very personal novel inspired by harrowing real-life events; Brian McGilloway’s much acclaimed The Last Crossing has its roots in The Troubles and the spiralling consequences which continue today; Nadine Matheson’s celebrated debut The Jigsaw Man took its inspiration from the real-life murder of Jeffrey Howe. Claire McGowan, who’s written both fiction and true crime, is in the chair.
