Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre in Knaresborough is holding an Art Maker Open Day on Tuesday 8th May from 10am – 2pm.
The event is aimed at people living with disabilities and their parents and carers, as well as professionals working in the sector. The Open Day provides a fantastic opportunity to visit Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre and find out more about the wide variety of creative and employability workshops available.
Almost 170 adults with disabilities, known at the Centre as Art Makers, travel from across the Yorkshire region to attend the weekday workshops. The Art Makers range in age from 17 to 80 years, with a wide range of physical and learning disabilities and additional support needs.
Art Maker Gavin said:
Coming to Henshaws has helped me develop new skills. I hadn’t tried embroidery before I came here but I love it as it helps me focus. This is a good place to come.
A personal assistant service is available for people who want to access the Centre’s services but who may need some assistance with personal care, feeding or support during break times.
Henshaws Art Makers also often attend social events at the Arts & Crafts Centre. These include monthly discos and weekend social activities which allow disabled people to meet and make new friends in a safe and supportive environment.
Maria Dawbarn, Centre Manager, said:
At the Centre we make more than art – we bring people together in an atmosphere that never fails to inspire. Through our personalised programme of workshops and training we support our Art Makers to realise their full potential. We look forward to sharing this at the upcoming Open Day.
