Harrogate Town

Boreham Wood 2  – 4 Harrogate Town

29 September 2018

Harrogate returned to winning ways with an exciting win over mid table Boreham Wood.

Simon Weaver rejigged Tuesday’s line against Wrexham, by replacing Dom Knowles with Aaron Williams and Jack Emmett made a welcome return to the subs bench after a troublesome hamstring injury.

Town had an early scare when Ilesanmi broke down the left and sent over a dangerous cross which luckily for Town found no takers.

However, on ten minutes the hosts opened the scoring when Ugwu bent low to head in a near post centre after Callum Howe had blocked a David Stephens attempt.

Within ten minutes Town were level as a pinpoint cross from the left from Joe Leesley, cut out the home defence and left George Thomson with the simple task of heading past Huddart from close range.

Boreham Wood hit back strongly and Kelvin Langmead was in position to block Ugwu’s shot, while soon afterwards, Manny Parry and Jamal Fyfield went close with headers.

Just before the end of a thoroughly entertaining first half, Lloyd Kerry had to be replaced by Emmett after picking up a knock.

Town took the lead for the first time, six minutes after the break, in rather fortunate circumstances.

Wood keeper Huddart dwelt on the ball allowing Williams to close him down and his delayed clearance hit the Town striker and rebounded into the net.

Things went from bad to worse for Boreham Wood because three minutes later, a powerful centre across the goal from Leesley struck Ilesanmi and bounced across the line for Town’s third.

Town were looking good value for an impressive win, but Ugwu had other ideas when he lashed in a tremendous drive from fully thirty yards past the helpless James Belshaw to record one of the goals of the season.

As the match entered the final quarter of an hour,Town put the game to bed with a superb goal from Emmett.
He picked up the ball in midfield and advanced on goal. The home defence, perhaps expecting a lay off, parted like the Red Sea and the diminutive Town striker curled his shot past Huddart from just outside the area.

It only remained for Belshaw to block Parry’s effort from close range and Town were, home and hosed, for another precious away victory.
