Disability Action Yorkshire open new retail outlet

26 November 2014

A Harrogate charity which runs a thriving second hand furniture enterprise has opened a new outlet for its growing collection of “up-cycled” pieces.

Disability Action Yorkshire has taken a unit at the popular Crimple Hall, on the A61 near Pannal, where it is displaying – and more importantly selling – items of furniture which have been repaired and renovated by young disabled adults.

The unit, located within the venue’s antiques centre, was officially opened by the Mayor of Harrogate, Coun Jim Clark, and his Mayoress, Coun Shirley Fawcett, at a ceremony attended by Disability Action Yorkshire trustees, staff and trainees.
The charity, which has owns a residential home on Claro Road, operates its main furniture business from its headquarters and training centre on Hornbeam Park.

Here, trainees are tasked with jobs that will give them a selection of skills to help them, lead an as independent life as possible.
The furniture outlet and clothes department gives them the opportunity to learn about customer service, retail and cash handling, in addition to working together as a team and interacting with members of the public.

Disability Action Yorkshire trustee Ian Bergel said: Our sales outlet at Crimple Hall’s antiques centre adds another dimension to our thriving furniture enterprise.

We are very lucky with the amount of items – both large and small – that are donated to us. This enables the charity to run a successful social enterprise that not only provides us with a source of income, but give our trainees a role within society.

Earlier this year, we started a little ‘renovation and repair’ project, where neglected items are given a lick of paint and polish and minor repairs are made.

It is these up-cycled items we are now selling at the antiques centre, and they are proving very popular indeed. This unit also helps to introduce us to a new audience who will help spread the word about our work.

I would also like to thank the Mayor of Harrogate, Coun Jim Clark and his Mayoress, Coun Shirley Fawcett, for officially opening our Crimple Hall antiques centre unit.

Lisa Newall from Crimple Hall Antiques Centre said: We have 60 antique dealers selling a wide variety of objects and goods, and we are proud that Disability Action Yorkshire has now joined this number.

We are also delighted to be supporting this charity and assisting them in raising money for their work via the sales of their furniture.
