North Yorkshire introduce new initiative for preparing for the cost of care

5 May 2014

The funding of long-term care is likely to be one of the biggest financial decisions anyone will ever have to make. People with savings or capital more than £23,250 are responsible for the full cost of their care. It is important that the people of North Yorkshire have access to information and advice to help them plan for the future and make the right choices for themselves or their loved ones.

North Yorkshire County Council has introduced a new initiative to support people in this position. It is working with a not-for-profit organisation PayingForCare to help people who are responsible for paying for their own care costs to access information and independent financial advice on all aspects of funding long-term care.

Support available from PayingForCare includes:

  • information on state benefits and how to claim;
  • information on different types of care;
  • access to specialist advice on the best way to fund long-term care; and
  • guidance on topics such as setting up a Power of Attorney or Will.

County Councillor Clare Wood, Executive Member for Adult Social Care said: The cost of care, and how to pay for it, are huge issues for people to face on their own.

It is vital to ensure that the right decisions, supported by the right information, are taken to suit people’s individual circumstances, so that they not only get the care they need, but are able to pay for it in the most sensible and appropriate ways.

Information about PayingForCare is also included in the North Yorkshire care services directory, the third edition of which is out this week. The directory is a useful resource for people looking for care service providers in the area and has been produced by Care Choices Ltd, in association with North Yorkshire County Council and the Independent Care Group.

It contains comprehensive listings of organisations providing residential care, and care in the home. There is also guidance on paying for services, and what financial assistance is available

People can call PayingForCare on 0808 208 9994 or for further information visit their website at www.payingforcare.org
