Western Primary pupils enjoy a day of Indian culture

17 July 2013

Years 3 & 4 at Western Primary School in Harrogate embraced an Indian Culture Day at the beginning of July.

The fun filled day saw the children practice the art of Rangoli Painting, a form of decorative art from India believed to bring good luck. The pupils then moved onto designing some wonderful traditional Indian clothing, full of vibrant colours. For those of a more industrious nature, the opportunity to create and erect an Indian Temple or stately building was possible through the Lego construction materials supplied by the school.

The Indian theme continued with a raucous traditional dance class, followed by a more relaxing but rather messy, henna tattooing session using chocolate.

Maddie Fleet, who designed a shimmering Indian dress said:

We learnt about the costumes Indian people wear, they’re really colourful and bright. It was great fun learning about them.

Teacher Dawn Thompson said of the day, “Though this has been a day of fun activities for the staff and the children, it follows the school ethos of educating the children to become citizens of the world.
