To tie in with their Science topics on rocks and forces, intrepid Year 3 pupils from Highfield Prep School this week set off from Harrogate to visit the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield.
They began their day with a workshop on forces and gravity and carried out an experiment with slopes and a coal trolley. After looking around the site and finding out about how air circulates round the mine pupils had the amazing opportunity to actual go underground, down t’ pit, in the original lift. Following this, retired miners guided us through the mine tour and we experienced “complete darkness” for the first time.
Although the day was really exciting and they emerged looking as grubby as real miners, the children decided that they were far happier being warm and clean at school than working in the mine!
