St Aidan’s Year 8 students triumph in the IET Faraday Engineering Challenge event

15 February 2013

On Tuesday, 12th February 2013 , St Aidan’s School in Harrogate hosted the Institution of Engineering and Technology Faraday Challenge Event in Constance Green Hall.

The scenario for the challenge was based on a disaster situation where a town had been cut off by a storm. The students played the role of ‘Disaster Engineers’ and had to design and then construct a method of sending a message to the occupants of the town across a mountain range.

The students also had to devise a simple but effective code so that the message could be easily transmitted, received and then converted back into English. During the judging the teams had to give a three minute presentation before sending a short message to the imaginary town. Engineers in the town then had to successfully decode the message. As well as having a lot of fun the students gained a real understanding of the issues facing engineers in disaster situations.

The St Aidan’s teams were competing against students from Harrogate Grammar School, Ripon Grammar School, Rossett School and Harrogate High School. At the end of the challenge the St Aidan’s team were judged as winners.

The winning students were (from left to right): Thomas Goring, Luke Parker, Olivia Sharpley, Sophie Hawkes, Yvonne Pearce and Edward Barrow
