Van Explosion, Nursery Lane, Leeds

Police are appealing for information following an explosion on Nursery Lane, Leeds shortly after 6pm last night (25/2).

A white transit van, which is believed to have been stolen, had caught fire and subsequently exploded. There have been no reported injuries.

It is believed the explosion was caused accidentally during an attempted break-in at a premises on Nursery Lane.

At the time of the incident, up to five men were seen close to the van but had made off prior to police arrival.

Following the explosion, a man was seen acting suspiciously in the area. He is described as white, 5ft 9, between 35 and 40 years old, black hair and of heavy build. He was wearing a black jacket, blue and white striped jumper and jeans.

DI Richard Holmes of North East Leeds CID, said: “This is an isolated incident during which some individuals were attempting to gain entry into a nearby premises when the equipment they were using caught fire.
“It is fortunate that no-one has been hurt and we are now appealing for help from the public to trace those responsible.”
