11 July 2011

The countdown is on for the start of the 153rd Great Yorkshire Show, which opens its gates to visitors tomorrow morning (Tuesday 12 July).

The 250-acre showground in the spa town of Harrogate is a hive of activity with final preparations underway for the opening of England’s premier agricultural show.

Lady Ba Ba, a pedigree Hampshire Down sheep, is getting ready for the show ring, but took time out today (Monday) to take a walk with model Isabelle Mason. Whilst Lady Ba Ba will be strutting her stuff before the sheep judges, Isabelle will be taking part in the event’s catwalk shows

Guests of honour are HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, who will be at the prestigious showcase of agriculture and country life on Wednesday. Other celebrities visiting the show include television personality Kirstie Allsopp of Channel 4’s ‘Location, Location, Location’ fame and Yorkshire author Gervase Phinn.

More than 130,000 visitors are expected to flock through the gates over the three days – Tuesday 12 to Thursday 14 July – and entry figures are at an all-time high, with a total of 12,713 received across the competitive classes.

As well as the thousands of animals competing for the coveted championships rosettes, the showground is packed with events and activities guaranteed to keep visitors entertained.

Many of the country’s leading show jumpers will be taking to the Main Ring competing for top trophies, while fashion designers from across Yorkshire, including prestigious womenswear store Hobbs, will be showcasing their collections on the catwalk during four-times daily fashion shows.

Leading chefs from across Yorkshire, including celebrity Rosemary Shrager, will be preparing delicious recipes live on stage at the Game Cookery Theatre while the Great Yorkshire Cheese and Dairy Show is marking its 10th anniversary this year.

CHANGE TO ROAD SYSTEM

Please note that the one way traffic system close to the showground on Wetherby Road (A661) will be operational from 6am each morning, rather than 7am.
