Eligible council tax payers invited to apply for Energy Bill Rebate

7 July 2022

Around 9,500 households will receive a letter from Harrogate Borough Council inviting them to apply for the £150 Energy Bills Rebate.

Earlier this year the government announced a package of support known as the Energy Bills Rebate. As part of this support, eligible council taxpayers who live in a band A to D property on 1 April will receive a one-off payment of £150 to support the household with rising energy costs.

To date, the borough council has processed more than 39,000 payments.

The council is now writing to those eligible households who haven’t completed the online form to do so, or call 01423 500600 so that payment can be made promptly after making a successful application.

Payment will be made for every household where:

the property is in council tax bands A-D (or in band E and receives a disabled band reduction)
the property is occupied and someone’s sole or main residence (second homes, empty properties and holiday lets are not eligible)
low-income households who receive help with their council tax bill (known as council tax reduction) are eligible
properties occupied only by students or severely mentally impaired persons and exempt from council tax are eligible

Councillor Graham Swift, Harrogate Borough Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for resources, enterprise and economic development, said:

I’d urge residents of eligible households to complete the online form, or get in touch with us on 01423 500600, as soon as possible so that we can ensure that they receive the £150 rebate.

The form can be completed online at: www.harrogate.gov.uk/council-tax, or alternatively eligible residents can call 01423 500600 where a member staff can complete the form on their behalf (residents will need their council tax bill and bank account details to hand).
