Bolton Wanderers 2 – 1 Harrogate Town

11 April 2021

It was another heartbreaking afternoon for Town as they conceded two soft second half goals to lose 2-1 at Bolton.

The game was preceded by a two minutes silence to commemorate the life of HRH  Prince Philip,The Duke of Edinburgh.

Unchanged Town took the game to the Trotters and should have opened the scoring after only three minutes, when Josh McPake teed up George Thomson, whose shot passed just the wrong side of the post.

Jack Muldoon was next to threaten with a shot just wide of the target, but on thirteen minutes the Wetherby Roaders took the lead.

Muldoon’s cross from the right  found Thomson and keeper Matt Gilks could only parry his shot onto Gethin Jones and the ball bounced into the net for an own goal.

Town were dominating proceedings and it took Bolton almost half an hour to create a chance.

Town failed to cut out a long clearance and Eoin Doyle raced through on goal, only to be denied by an excellent save low to his left by James Belshaw.

The half ended with Lloyd Kerry being booked for a foul on Marcus Maddison.

The second half opened with Mark Beck heading, wide from a Thomson centre but the referee had already blown

for a push.

However,on fiftythree minutes the Wanderers equalised.

Dan Jones won then lost the ball in midfield and then Lloyd Isgrove tried his luck from outside the Town area.

His weakly struck shot seemed to wrong foot the Town defenders and trickle past the unsighted Belshaw, to nestle in the far corner of the net.

Unfortunately,on 78 minutes, disaster struck again when the off balance Connor Hall attempted a back pass to Belshaw.

It was under hit and Doyle took advantage to intercept and shoot past Belshaw for Bolton’s  second.

Town battered at the Trotter’s defence as they tried to rescue a point.

Gilks made a superb save to turn Jon Stead’s header from a Jones throw over the bar and Brendan Kiernan also shot over the top.

Town did force the ball over the line in stoppage time but the referee ruled it out for an infringement.

Let’s hope for better things next Saturday when we entertain Bradford City.
