Public debate planned on Brexit, organised by North Yorkshire for Europe

3 January 2019

A Public Debate on Brexit is to be held in Harrogate – Friday 25 January 2019 between 19:00 and 21:00

The debate, organised by North Yorkshire for Europe and will be held in the Wesley Centre in the centre of Harrogate. If all the parties attend, then the panel will be formed of 1 supporting Brexit and 4 being against Brexit – it’s difficult to see how that will lead to balanced debate.

It will be chaired by Prof John C. Adams MBE, who has previously chaired political debates on the monarchy, proportional representation and the 2016 referendum.

The event is entitled, “Brexit – What’s next?”

Organisers say that they have invited Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Green party and UKIP. That means that 4 of the 5 are entering the debate are from an anti-Brexit starting point, if you view Theresa May’s proposal as not delivering Brexit.

Harrogate MP Andrew Jones is unlikely to attend as it is a paid-for event and against his policy for people to have to pay to listen to his views.

North Yorkshire for Europe chair Richard Sadler said:

With politicians in Westminster apparently unable to agree on the best way forward, we felt the time was right to have a free and open debate about Brexit.

The decisions taken over the coming months on the future relationship with our closest neighbours will have huge implications for the people of this region and the country as a whole – so it is only right that they should have their say over decisions taken by MPs in their name.

Tickets to the debate cost £5 (or £2.50 for students/ unwaged) and are available in advance by following this link to Eventbrite page https://bit.ly/2SmCYn0

Organisers have said that it is not a fund raiser for the local remain campaign, any surplus after paying for the room hire and promotion will be donated to the Harrogate Homeless Project.
