Students inspired to bring poetry off the page

15 October 2018

Students at Rossett School welcomed poetic rapper and storytelling songwriter, Rob Bradley, to a special assembly as part of the Broughton Hall Children’s Literature Festival.

The performance to Year 7s focused on building an improvised, freestyle rap, with pupils given the creative task of coming up with the words.

The aim of the presentation was to explore the structure of poetry including rhyme and rhythm in an engaging way. As part of the visit, Rob held a workshop for students in which they collaborated to perform a rap about food and eating.

The workshops are a way of teaching literacy and poetic techniques, as well as building young people’s confidence and communication skills. They also give students the opportunity to develop their own lyrics and creative ideas in a fun environment.

Headteacher Helen Woodcock said:

Rob’s performance and presentation received a very enthusiastic response from our students and staff.

It was an excellent way to engage with pupils and bring poetry off the page. Everyone was extremely excited to perform a rap and the workshop helped our students think about all the skills that go into devising poetry, together with the element of performance.

We were delighted to be part of the Broughton Hall Children’s Literature Festival and hope to invite Rob back in the future to work with our students again.
