Yorkshire in Bloom success for Harrogate and District Community Groups

Results of the 2018 Yorkshire in Bloom competition have been released and Harrogate and District groups are celebrating success.

Communities from Team Harrogate, Pateley Bridge and Starbeck were all awarded top marks and Gold certificates from the Yorkshire in Bloom judges with Team Harrogate triumphing in the Small City class, Pateley Bridge being declared winners of the large village category and Starbeck in Bloom winning the award for Best Spring Floral Displays.

The Himalayan Garden at Grewelthorpe near Ripon is also celebrating being announced as Yorkshire in Bloom Best Visitor Attraction sharing the award with Brodsworth Hall in Doncaster. The judges described the Himalayan Garden as quite something to behold and one of Yorkshire’s hidden Horticultural gems.

 

 

Volunteers in Spofforth were delighted that Ginny Greenholes Environmental Play Scheme and the Millennium Gardens in the village were both awarded Platinum certificates in the class for Parks and Open Spaces. Judges described Ginny Greenholes play area as a well loved part of the village and they thought that the Millennium Garden planting was of an excellent standard.

In the same class, The Friends of Valley Garden Harrogate and the Pinewoods Conservation Group are both celebrating wowing the judges and receiving Platinum awards. Both groups were commended for their outstanding voluntary work in their own communities. Team work was highlighted across all the entries as very good and the judges commented that community spirit was in evidence everywhere.

Knaresborough in Bloom completed the Yorkshire in Bloom gold rush and the judges commented on how much they had enjoyed looking round the historic town.

In the small villages class Bewerley achieved a gold certificate whilst Boroughbridge and Kirkby Malzeard both took home Silver Gilt awards.

Yorkshire in Bloom co-ordinator John Stanley is delighted with such a great set of results despite the intense heat that volunteers have battled with. He commented that despite the very difficult conditions this summer preceded by an exceptionally cold winter everyone has rallied round. “Community spirit in Yorkshire will always bring people together to overcome adversity”, he said.
