Harrogate district flowerbeds get celebratory splashes of colour

21 August 2018

Four flower beds across the Harrogate district have been specially designed thanks to Harrogate Borough Council and the efforts of local groups.

Flower beds at Knaresborough Castle, in Ripon Spa Gardens, Harrogate’s Valley Gardens and at Knaresborough House have all been transformed with different themes.

The floral display at Knaresborough castle celebrates 50 years since steam locomotives last hauled trains on the mainline under British Rail.

It was designed by children from St Johns primary school in the town who won a design-a-flower-bed competition organised by Knaresborough In Bloom group.

The flower bed at Knaresborough House marks the 90th anniversary of the creation of Scriven Women’s Institute, which first met in 1928.

The displays in Ripon and Harrogate were both designed to mark the formation, in 1943, of the Trefoil Guild when it was originally known as the ‘Older Guides’.

Trefoil groups are still going strong in both towns 75 years later.

Councillor Andy Paraskos, cabinet member with responsibility for parks, said:

We are very lucky to have some very talented gardeners who work for the council.

They have done an amazing job transforming everyone’s ideas and concepts into stunning floral displays.

I’d like to thank everyone involved for their support and to congratulate the children from St Johns school on their winning design.
