Disability Action Yorkshire treasures money raised by HPH Pirate Crew

2 August 2018

Swash-buckling accountants from a Harrogate firm have battled it out on the “Seven Seas of York” to raise money for three North Yorkshire charities.

A 17-strong crew from Hornbeam Park-based HPH Chartered Accountants were one of 36 teams who competed in the York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge, which has been held every year on the River Ouse since 2003.

Over the last 15 years this annual event has helped raise more than £1m for good causes.

For their part, the HPH team – which included a crucial drummer to keep the rowers in time – took to the water dressed as pirates.

And, in true buccaneer fashion, they secured a booty of £1,587, which has been split between the charities – near neighbours Disability Action Yorkshire, York Mind and York Citizens Advice Bureau.

Sarah Wearing, a partner at HPH Chartered Accountants, said:

This is the third year we have participated in the dragon boat challenge which are always great fun.

In addition to raising money for charities it is superb for building team spirit and we involve our clients too.

We would like to thank everyone who sponsored us which in turn has benefited three great organisations. Disability Action Yorkshire will receive over £1,000 and the remaining balance will be split between the other two charities.

Jackie Snape, Chief Executive of Disability Action Yorkshire, said:

We are extremely grateful to HPH for nominating us as one of their chosen charities.

Our organisation could not continue to provide the high-quality services it does to disabled people if it wasn’t for the generosity of individuals and businesses such as HPH.
