Independent Chair sought for Domestic Abuse Scrutiny Panel

10 June 2018

A new Domestic Abuse Scrutiny Panel is being set up by Julia Mulligan, Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, to review and improve the handling of domestic abuse cases and the support and safeguarding of victims in North Yorkshire.

The panel will particularly focus on the identification, investigation and prosecution of coercive and controlling behaviour offences and the support offered to these victims.

Through its work the panel will improve police performance and make recommendations to partners as appropriate, aiming to increase public confidence and encourage more victims to come forward for support.

The first stage in setting up the panel is to appoint an independent Chair; the panel will comprise a number of different individuals and agencies. The Independent Chair will lead the panel, working with the Police and Crime Commissioner to highlight good practice, and making recommendations to the police and partner agencies.

Julia said:

Improving how the police care about the most vulnerable people in North Yorkshire is a key part of my Police and Crime Plan. Domestic abuse has far-reaching consequences for victims and their families, creating vulnerability in children, possibly over more than one generation.

In North Yorkshire we need to be particularly aware of how this affects our rural communities that cannot easily access services.

I look forward to working with the new Chair and panel to identify how we can improve the response here in North Yorkshire.

The post is voluntary but expenses will be reimbursed.
