Harrogate volunteer tackles Great North Swim to raise money for Sea Cadets

7 June 2018

Harrogate volunteer Andy Langford, 24, is taking on the one-mile swim through Lake Windermere on Saturday 9 June 2018 to raise money for national youth charity Sea Cadets.

Former sea cadet Andy, who now volunteers with his local group, is attempting the challenge for the first time, and is aiming to complete the distance in less than 40 minutes.

He is raising money for Sea Cadets, and said:

I’ve always enjoyed challenging myself and this event will allow me to do this.

I’ve had so many opportunities with sea cadets, including sailing on tall ships, taking part in massed band events and making loads of new friends and learning lots of new skills.

I’ve been involved in sea cadets for 12 years now and would tell anyone to just go along and give it a try. I give three nights a week to my local unit and I love it. The opportunities it has given both me and many cadets and volunteers are second to none.

Sea Cadets gives life changing opportunities to young people, building skills and boosting confidence through activities on the water that will take them to the next level whatever they want to do when they leave school. The charity has places all over the UK, and supports young people through some of the most challenging times of their lives.

Sea Cadets has places available in a number of challenge events this year, including the Royal Parks Half, Snowdon Triple Challenge and Coast to Coast cycle challenge. Fundraisers who need to raise a minimum amount will be supported every step of the way by the charity.
