Rossett hosts successful American Exchange

Students from the US state of Maine have been discovering more about life in Yorkshire as part of Rossett School’s highly successful American exchange programme.

Year 9 pupils welcomed 30 exchange partners from Falmouth, Maine, for a jam-packed itinerary including visits to the Royal Armouries in Leeds, Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Yorkshire Coal Mining Museum. Among the highlights was a trip further afield to the Warner Bros Studio tour: The Making of Harry Potter.

The American students stayed with their host families for 10 days to get a flavour of living and learning in the UK. They also spent time in school and enjoyed a fish and chip supper to celebrate the long-standing partnership between the schools.   As a gesture of friendship Falmouth School donated books about Maine to the Rossett School library.

Rossett School headteacher Helen Woodcock said: “The annual exchange programme is a great opportunity for young people to broaden their horizons and experience for themselves life and learning in other countries.

“I know our American students enjoyed the planned visits immensely, particularly finding out more about the history of Yorkshire. Our continued partnership and friendship with our American exchange school enriches our students’ learning opportunities and gives them a wider international outlook.

“We are pleased our highly successful programme continues to go from strength to strength.”

Last autumn, the Year 9 students visited Maine to enjoy a taste of American culture. Plans are already in place for the next year group to make the trip this October and continue the 30-year partnership.
