Curzon Ashton 1  – 2 Harrogate Town

8 October 2017

A late goal from new signing, Mitchell Curry, gave Town all three points at the Tameside Stadium, home of Curzon Ashton.

Town survived an early scare when Max Leonard’s ball over,Ryan Fallowfield, found Joe Guest and although he went down inside the area, Referee Andrew Tankard waved away appeals for a penalty.

It took only ten minutes for Town to edge in front, when Joe Leesley’s drive from twenty yards struck a defender’s heels and diverted past a stranded, Cameron Mason, into the corner of the net.

Town kept up the pressure and Curzon’s Steve Howson made a vital block to keep out Fallowfield’s centre.

“The Nash”, as Curzon are known, equalised after twentyfive minutes when Ben Wharton made ground down the inside left channel and his ball across the area was brilliantly lashed into the top left hand corner by Chris Rowney.

Town were shading the exchanges and Josh Falkingham’s pass found Leesley unmarked but his centre was just too high for Jordan Thewlis to convert.

Guest and James Baillie fired over the top for Curzon, while at the other end,Jack Emmett and Leesley combined to release Thewlis, but Mason parried his cross over the bar.

Town, with a slight breeze in their favour, took control after the break and Fallowfield pushed forward to shoot wide of the angle, after being set up by Thewlis.

Terry Kennedy headed wide from a Leesley cross and Jack Vann, who had replaced the injured,Ben Parker, shot straight at Mason.

A superb strike from George Thomson curled just wide of the Curzon upright, but “The Nash”,hit back strongly.

Rowney tested James Belshaw with a strong drive and Town nearly conceded when Belshaw raced out of his area to head clear, only to see Baillie’s return lob from distance, hit the side netting with the goal wide open.

However, Town with Warren Burrell excellent in defence and Falkingham controlling the midfield, had the final say.

With only three minutes of normal time remaining, Curry who had replaced Thewlis, raced on to Liam Agnew’s through ball and shot low into the far corner to give Town a hard fought victory.
