The A1(M) northbound between junction 48 (Boroughbridge) and junction 49 (Dishforth) will remain closed until further notice.
Police are expecting to open lane 3 of the carriageway at 10am, to allow trapped traffic to disperse. However, motorists are still advised to avoid the area.
Those currently travelling northbound on the A1(M) are advised to leave at junction 46 and use the diversion on to the A168, to rejoin the A1(M) at junction 49.
