Businesses come together to support fundraising efforts

7 August 2017

A group of fundraisers have received a boost to their efforts thanks to local businesses uniting for a special event.

Under the challenge “£40k in 40 years”, six Harrogate women are aiming to raise £40,000 for a variety of causes by 2021. Next February, they plan to trek the Sahara in aid of Harrogate charity Wellspring Therapy and Training – and they began their preparation with a Mental Health Lunch at local restaurant William and Victoria.

It saw local businesses help the group raise £500 in just a couple of hours, with a drinks reception donated by Slingsby Gin and raffle prizes from health and beauty companies.

Jo Straker, who looks after the marketing and business planning side of Will & Vics, joined the group for the lunch.

Jo said:

One of the best things about running the restaurant is that it brings us into contact with some truly inspiring and extraordinary people,” she said. “Paula and her group of fundraisers have such incredible spirit and it was wonderful to be able to contribute to their hard work.

The event was just one of a series in a busy month for private events at Will & Vics. Based on Cold Bath Road on the edge of Harrogate town centre, it hosted everything from a first aid training course to a wedding reception in its private dining room.

It also welcomed two business events, including for local networking group BLaH (Business Ladies around Harrogate) and the Alternative Business Lunch with a wine tasting.

Jo’s husband David Straker, whose family has run Will & Vics for more than 30 years, said: “We’ve always been proud to be at the heart of the community and the events over the last month have underlined for us the role we play.

David said:

Being part of a personal event such as a wedding is a real privilege – we know we help to make memories for a family for the rest of their lives and we do all we can to make it the most special day of their lives.

Equally, hosting a business or fundraising event is a responsibility as the right food, drink and surroundings can help to keep the conversation flowing and the donations coming in. It also brings us into contact with other great local businesses which can lead to new partnerships, too.
