A new kind of Easter family fun comes to Harrogate Theatre

28 March 2017

This April the creative team behind Harrogate Theatre’s much-loved pantomime brings something very special to the Harrogate stage – a new adaptation of The Emperor’s New Clothes.

  • The Emperor’s New Clothes opens at Harrogate Theatre on Thursday 6 April and runs until Saturday 15 April with a total of 15 shows over 10 days

As a special treat for the little ones in your life head to Harrogate Theatre this Easter holiday for an unforgettable contemporary take on Hans Christian Andersen’s cheeky tale.

Emperor Benedict is very important and VERY famous. All he needs now is a fresh new wardrobe to really look the part and impress his citizens. But when a mysterious French fashion designer appears on the scene, all is not what it seams…..

With original music and songs, and plenty of off-the-cuff jokes and opportunities to get involved in the action, this enchanting and fresh new take on Andersen’s famous fable teaches us that it’s truly what’s on the inside that counts.

The Emperor’s New Clothes is adapted for the stage by David Bown, directed by Phil Lowe, and the simple-yet-innovative set is designed by Foxton – all three names usually associated with the acclaimed annual Harrogate pantomime. This is an exciting new project for this creative powerhouse.

The small but perfectly formed cast list is impressive too: Emperor Benedict is played by David Westbrook, Dawn Hope will be Empress Natasha, Lucy J Quinlan is Princess Aubergine, and Peter Ashmore will play Mr Babble and Mr Squabble. The production will also feature members of Harrogate Youth Theatre.

Director Phil Lowe hopes this is just the start of something new: Harrogate Theatre’s pantomime is a very special annual event for many families, and it’s really exciting to be able to bring a touch of that magic at Easter too. We really have got all the best ingredients here – a great script, brilliant cast, fantastic set, and a creative team with proven success at delivering this type of memory-making family-friendly show. We want as many people as possible to see it and to love it – it would be wonderful if this could become something we do every year.
