No smoking signs go up in Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough Parks

8 December 2016

Harrogate Borough Council has erected signs in Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough parks, asking people to not smoke.

A spokesperson for Harrogate Borough Council said: In 2014, the council carried out a public consultation on whether to impose a complete ban or simply to discourage smoking in children’s play areas.  80 per cent of the responses we received were in favour of some action being taken.

We have put up signs at three of our play areas, at Valley Gardens, Knaresborough Pool and Ripon Spa Park, asking people not to smoke in these areas.   The aim is to discourage people from smoking at these locations and complying with the request on the signs is voluntary.

The signs – which say “Please don’t smoke, I play here”, have been put up for a 12 month trial.
