Ripon sinkhole update

10 November 2016

Harrogate Borough Council, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, and utility services have today continued their investigations into a sinkhole which appeared in the back garden of a property on Magdalens Road in Ripon on the evening of Wednesday (9 November 2016).

As a matter of precaution, residents from 12 properties have been advised to vacate their homes.

Insurance assessors from the two of the four properties affected by the sinkhole have already visited the scene to conduct their own investigations.

Experts from the British Geological Society will be visiting the location tomorrow (Friday 11 November).

Access to the rear of the properties affected by the sinkhole on Magdalens Road are to be fenced off to ensure the safety of the public.

Following an inspection by Yorkshire Water, it appears that a section of the sewerage system servicing a number of properties on the terrace at Magdalens Road has collapsed underground as a result of the sinkhole.

Once it has been confirmed that the area is safe, Yorkshire Water will put in place mitigation measures to restore sewerage services to customers.

Harrogate Borough Council are continuing to work closely with the residents and other services to assess the situation.
