Lockwoods’ mural Commended in Ripon Awards

20 October 2016

Ripon, North Yorkshire – Lockwoods’ restaurant on North Street, Ripon, has been Commended in the Ripon Civic Society Awards, for its development of the Alice in Wonderland mural outside the restaurant.

The Civic Society awards ceremony is a major event in Ripon when the best new and restored buildings, the best craftsmanship, shop-front renovation and environmental improvements are all recognised as quality additions to the life of the citizens of Ripon.
Lockwoods was commended for its environmental improvement of the area outside the restaurant, which started a year ago when the restaurant started a competition for school children to help commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s much loved book, Alice in Wonderland. The mural remains a unique outdoor painting in the City.

The work was created by about 50 local school children, with each school painting an individual mural, which Lockwoods mounted, framed and treated to protect it for all to enjoy.

Lockwoods’ owner Matthew Lockwood:

It is always nice to be recognised for adding something to our local community. I know this was a labour of love for all involved, and a big thank you to those that made this idea a reality, especially the local school children. I feel proud every day I come to work and see it hanging on the wall outside the restaurant.

Lockwoods is currently looking for the Best of British recipes for its next competition with Ripon schools. Winners will come to the restaurant and cook with the head chef and learn about our great British cuisine.
