Harrogate Town v Curzon Ashton match report

4 September 2016

A penalty, deep into stoppage time, robbed Harrogate of all three points, at a rain lashed Wetherby Road.

Town’s starting line up was unchanged, apart from Andi Thanoj replacing the injured Lloyd Kerry.

Town produced a scintillating first half hour which saw them race into a two goal lead.

The Curzon goal was peppered with shots and Hakan Burton had to make saves from Jack Emmett and Joe Leesley, while Andi Thanoj fired just over from fully thirty yards.

Curzon were playing some good counter attacking football and Paul Ennis was proving a threat down the left with two shots at Peter Crook and a cross which Chris Rowney forced Turner to clear off the line.

However, two goals in seven minutes put Town firmly into the driving seat.

Firstly, Tom Platt’s incisive through ball found Jon Paul Pittman and his first touch took him clear of the defence to slip the ball past Burton.

Soon afterwards, Leesley’s free kick from the touchline created havoc in the visiting defence and Pittman got the final touch to make it two.

This was the high watermark of Town’s afternoon and within four minutes “The Nash” had reduced the arrears.

Simon Ainge was penalised for a foul on Niall Cummings on the left touchline and Ennis whipped a free kick across Town’s goal which the unmarked Matty Flynn turned in at the far post.

Curzon, clearly suited by Town’s new surface, were playing a short passing game and stretching the Town defence.
Jordan Wright and Joe Guest combined to make a chance for Ennis but Town managed to deflect his shot for a corner.

Town responded with Leesley twice hitting long range efforts at Burton, while Chib Chilaka, who had just replaced Pittman, lashed a vicious cross shot at goal which was diverted away for a corner.

It appeared that Town would hold on for a win,but in the third minute of added time, Tom Platt was penalised for a strong challenge and Cummings made no mistake from the penalty spot.
