Residents warned to be wise to phone scam

30 July 2016

Residents across the Harrogate district are being reminded to be careful about the information they give over the phone to prevent them becoming the victim of a scam.

The reminder follows the council being made aware of calls to residents from a company claiming to be dealing with council tax refunds and asking for bank details.

If residents receive such a call, or indeed any call that they suspect is fraudulent, they should not give out any personal details and contact Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud reporting centre for fraud and cyber crime.  Action Fraud provides a central point of contact for information about fraud and financially motivated internet crime and works to prevent people being scammed and conned.

If somebody has already given out personal details, and is worried they may have been subject to a scam, they should:

  • call their bank immediately to let them know about the scam and so they can cancel the credit card or change bank details
  • ask the bank to try and trace the payment
  • contact Action Fraud

For details of all different types of fraud and details of reporting and staying safe, go to http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/about-usor you can phone Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
